World Day Against the Death Penalty – 10th October 2026

Bayside Community Care stands firmly against Capital Punishment, wherever it occurs.

At Bayside Community Care, we are proud to partner with the Capital Punishment Justice Project (CPJP), an Australian organisation working towards a world without the death penalty. Together, we continue to advocate for those at risk of execution and support the families left behind.

On the 14th October, the President of Bayside Community Care and CPJP Ambassador, Christie Buckingham, was joined by Julian McMahon AC SC, barrister and CPJP Ambassador, as well as Sara Kowal, CPJP Vice-Chair and Director, Elos Justice at Monash University, to deliver an informative and provocative conversation to mark World Against the Death Penalty Day.

Over dinner, with a group of like-minded individuals who refuse to give up and choose to be part of the momentum for abolition, those closest to the fight shared first-hand stories. These were stories of extraordinary resilience, hard-won progress, and unwavering hope for a world without the death penalty.

Standing up against the death penalty isn’t a new commitment for us. In 2015, we stood alongside Bali Nine members Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran in the lead-up to their executions, advocating for mercy and walking beside their families through an unimaginable time.

We have also worked quietly behind the scenes for British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford, who spent more than a decade on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking. Last November, after years of advocacy, Lindsay was finally released and returned home to the UK.

During her time at Kerobokan Prison, Lindsay spearheaded a craft group among fellow inmates, giving women a way to build skills, earn income and find purpose behind bars. Bayside Community Care has proudly supported this group, known as Threads of Hope — a name that says everything about what it represents. Even in the darkest circumstances, hope can be woven, stitch by stitch, into something that sustains people and connects them to the world outside.

On the World Day Against the Death Penalty, we remembered Andrew and Myuran, celebrated Lindsay’s freedom, and recommitted to standing with anyone facing this ultimate injustice.
